During in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures, each retrieved egg is fertilized by the partner’s sperm to produce embryo, the human new offspring. In this video, the American Fertility Association provides an overview of intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI) for IVF pregnancy.
ICSI is performed by IVF laboratory trained embryologist. Embryologist injects the sperm with a special needle inside the women’s egg to facilitate fertilization process. ICSI is typically recommended for couples with a low fertilization chances in IVF cycle and especially for patients struggling with male factor infertility. You can learn more about the ICSI by watching the full clip.

Infertility is defined as inability to conceive or carry pregnancy after one full year of unprotected intercourse, or six months for women over the age of 35. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends that couples with infertility should seek out the care of an infertility specialist in order to help getting pregnant.
Your infertility doctor will ask about your medical history including topics such as your menstrual history, pregnancy history, previous surgery, previous infections or sexually transmitted diseases, current medications, history of birth control use and relevant lifestyle factors.
Common female-specific infertility tests include blood tests to evaluate women’s basic ovarian function, her ovulation and luteal phase defects. Male-specific infertility testing starts with semen analysis.
Your infertility specialist may recommend pre-implantation genetic diagnostic testing (PGD) for patients with known genetic disorders and for parents of children with congenital anomalies. PGD is indicated for couples with family history of X-linked genetic disorders, chromosomal translocations, autosomal recessive diseases, and autosomal dominant diseases.
After diagnosis, the most important decision is your choice of therapy. Discuss with your Doctor available treatment options and what results to expect. Male infertility requires intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ICSI, or testicular sperm harvesting. Women who had tubal libation or tubal ligation reversal that did not work should consider In vitro fertilization (IVF), a very effective treatment for blocked fallopian tubes.
IVF with success rates higher then success rates of other therapies and affordable cost became today the best choice for majority of infertility patients.
